Club Director, Mark Scott
The roots of the CCFA reach back to 1971 when Jim Scott, a freshman at UNC-Chapel Hill, enrolled in a fencing class for Physical Education. He proceeded to become a varsity team member and captain of the UNC squad during his four year career.
In 1974, Jim introduced his younger brother, Mark, to the sport and to UNC Fencing Coach, Ron Miller, prior to Mark's freshman year at UNC. Mark began fencing class in P.E. during his fall semester, and also started practicing with the team. He won the UNC Intramural Championship and during his collegiate career earned four varsity letters, was on three ACC Championship teams, participated in the NCAA championships, was chosen Team Captain his senior year, and received the UNC Educational Foundation Award as the Outstanding Senior Fencer. He then served as Assistant Coach for the UNC team for the 1978-79 season.
Mark revived his career in October, 2003. Mark finished the 2004-2005 season ranked #1 in the NC Veteran's Men's Foil Division, and #2 on the overall Men's Foil points list. Since returning to fencing, Mark has won seven foil events, one epee event, finishing second ten times, finishing third four times, plus eleven other top 10 finishes in foil, at 51 years of age. He recently finished a term as Chairman of the North Carolina Division of the US Fencing Association for 2004-2005.
Mark has been married since 1979 to Ann. They have two adult children - Kyle and Christina, and live in Surfside Beach, SC.
